BAKEMARK UK AND BAKO CELEBRATE CRAFT BAKER WEEK WITH PRESTON SCHOOL CHILDREN

Leading craft bakery supplier BakeMark UK teamed up with Preston based bakery ingredients distributor Bako North Western to celebrate National Craft Baker Week and educate school children about the importance of craft bakers.

National Craft Baker Week (NCBW), which this year ran from 8th to 13th June, aims to highlight the skills and value of craft bakers across the UK, targeting up to 22,000.shools As part of the week, an educational programme aimed at school children was developed under the theme ‘The Shop that Never Sleeps’.

Julie Robertshaw, BakeMark UK Business Development Manager for the North West of England was joined by Lynsey Townley, Ian Best, John Robertshaw and Sara Crabtree from Bako, in the visit to Grimsargh Primary School in Grimsargh, near Preston, to work with 60 five year-old children.

‘The Shop That Never Sleeps’ is a presentation designed for children which uses a play activity to stimulate learning. While the group talks about the role of a baker, where their favourite bakery items come from and when they are made - usually when the children are asleep - the children decorate gingerbread men and are encouraged to ask lots of questions about baking and bakers.

Lynsey Townley, Customer Services Supervisor for Bako, said: “We would like to thank head teacher Mrs Ward and the children from Grimsargh Primary School for taking part in NCBW and we hope they had lots of fun decorating the gingerbread men. The fun activities really helped to highlight the importance of bakers in the community to the children who were all fascinated by the role bakers have.”

Julie Robertshaw, BakeMark UK Business Development Manager for the North West of England, said: “Working with the children was fantastic and the presentation was a great way of teaching them how important a baker is to their community – which is what NCBW is all about. In addition, the event is an excellent vehicle to promote craft bakery as a solid career choice.”

Ivor McKane, Artisan Business Unit Director at BakeMark UK, who is on the NCBW committee said: “BakeMark is committed to supporting craft bakers. NCBW 2009 was a huge success and helped to raise the profile of the local baker through educational programmes such as ‘The Shop That Never Sleeps’.”
